Mayor of Hauraki

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Fix roads, footpaths and potholes first, keeping people safe and connected before spending on extras.

    Improve walking and cycling links where practical so kids, seniors and families have safe, healthy ways to get around.

    Work with regional partners to improve bus links so towns stay connected, supporting youth, seniors and workers.

  • Invest in two community vans that consistently travel between Matamata, Morrinsville and Te Aroha.

    Allow community vans to be driven by anyone with a full licence who wishes to earn money that day.

    Invest in upskilling local people for licences if they already have a minimum full licence.
