Mayor of South Wairarapa

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Encourage faster cleanup of Wairarapa Moana and rivers, as well as effective pest control.

    Ensure maximum waste minimisation within affordability parameters, including encouraging home composting.

    Work with the other Wairarapa councils to ensure adequate, affordable potable water and water for crop irrigation.

  • Work with GWRC and local landowners to improve water quality and protect waterways, ensuring South Wairarapa communities have a strong voice in decisions.

    Support community groups and landowners to protect biodiversity through pest control, native planting and partnerships.

    Ensure improvement in council's own wastewater and rubbish services to deliver practical, affordable solutions for all.
