Climate change and resilience
Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Continue reviewing Waikato District Council's own emissions from pools, street lighting, vehicles and other sources through an emissions lens.
Enable and support Waikato District Council to develop additional renewable energy production from solar and wind by working with local communities.
Ensure readiness and resources for civil defence coordination in response to more frequent and severe storm and heavy rain events.
Implement 2024 climate response and resilience strategy as per Waikato District Council website with reference to climate response.
Focus climate action plan on operational emissions, efficiencies and actions, and prioritise community climate action plan to mitigate, build resilience and adapt.
Advance civil defence emergency management plans underway or completed to approximately 20 plus this term, including inviting 40 marae for marae resilience civil defence, as referenced on Waikato District Council website.
