Far North District Council

Te Hiku General Ward
The Far North District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). two councillors will be elected from the Te Hiku ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

    Maintain safe, reliable drinking water, wastewater and sewerage services.

    Strengthen animal control and dog licensing by promoting responsible ownership, effective enforcement and community education.

  • Encourage and incentivise alternative environmentally friendly gathering and disposal methods at a household level.

    Evaluate the environmental impacts of every sewerage station in the rohe, including the ability to sustain increased volume.
