Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Promote native planting and regenerative farming on Māori and community land for long-term carbon sequestration, biodiversity and jobs.
Increase climate resilience fund and back community-led adaptation planning to support coastal communities to adapt and thrive.
Upgrade flood-prone roads, culverts and bridges before storms hit and strengthen infrastructure for future events.
Invest in resilient infrastructure to protect local communities and businesses from flooding and stormwater damage.
Use existing skills and knowledge within NRC to implement strategies to minimise streambank erosion and add them into budget.
