Ruapehu General Ward
The Ruapehu District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Ruapehu ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

    Improve three-waters transparency by publishing water quality and wastewater performance data annually.

    Strengthen stormwater and wastewater systems through a water services delivery plan by 2026.

  • Improve the council's education strategy on waste minimisation and reduce the cost of council rubbish bags to Gold and Community Service card holders.

  • Change council policy on kerbside collection to wheely bins, reducing collections to fortnightly and increasing the range of recyclables.

    Review the contract for waste management to ensure it provides the best possible outcomes for the least expenditure.

    Review costs of dog licencing to reduce pricing, remove costs for working dogs and increase impound fines to discourage roaming dogs.

  • Ensure safe drinking water, reliable wastewater and resilient stormwater systems through smart investment and local oversight.
