Mayor of Whanganui

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Establish a native tree planting programme for suitable parks, reserves and public land across the district and promote riparian planting.

    Continue to fund the collection of rural waste services through the general rate because everyone benefits from a clean rural environment.

    Review the waste minimisation plan and examine issuing a council contract for household waste collection.

  • Lower power costs and explore options such as biogas, wind and solar on council land.

  • Create green corridors.

    Integrate Te Awa Tupua into council strategy and work with iwi and hapū to develop achievable goals.
