Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

Protect waterways by supporting riparian planting, reducing run-off and encouraging land management practices.
Support community-led biodiversity projects including native planting and pest control to protect and restore local ecosystems.
Promote waste reduction by encouraging recycling, composting and disposal through facilities and community education.
Continue work undertaken over the last 26 years with local communities in native tree planting including in their climate change action plans.
Enhance native biodiversity by regenerative planting on HDC reserves where possible.
Support predator trapping groups in the South Ward by fundraising and personal involvement.
Enhance the work being done to preserve, restore and protect the natural environment through native planting, weed control and pest control.
Support all moves to protect rivers' and aquifers' water quality in the region.
Update the waste management system to better handle recycling, reuse and recovery of useful materials and support those doing this work.
