Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Build the Tākaka–Collingwood Trail to provide safe commuting options that are climate-friendly.
Facilitate a backup system to make communications more resilient, especially 111 calls, covering the affected area from Riwaka to Collingwood.
Work with the NZ Transport Agency to lift the highway at Waitapu Splash to prevent frequent closures of the sole road north.
Commit to regeneration of natural areas and social cohesion over increased GDP growth, debt, production, consumption and pollution by 2027.
Measure wellbeing of council staff and community through subjective wellbeing metrics and biannual surveys by 2027.
Implement planetary boundaries metrics to keep within Earth's limits, guiding resource use, emissions and ecosystem protection by 2027.
